College App Season: Reassessing the List

Updated: Sep 8

The college application pressure is peaking — and for many students, it's a whirlwind of essays, deadlines, and tough decisions.

At our practice, we’re deep in one of the most intense phases of the college process, supporting students as they:

  • Draft and refine their main + supplemental essays

  • Condense years of leadership and impact into tight Common App character limits

  • Tackle nuanced application questions — especially around major selection

  • Set up and navigate STARS accounts and other school-specific portals

  • Take (or retake) final standardized tests

  • Prep for interviews, if available

  • Stay on top of demonstrated interest — campus visits, email engagement, info sessions

And they’re doing all this while launching their senior year — often with more rigorous classes, leadership roles, family responsibilities, and part-time jobs. It’s a lot.

On our side, we’re tracking key shifts across the admissions landscape.

Enrollment leadership moves.

  • New VPs, regional reps, or rural/outreach hires can signal changing institutional priorities.

Policy changes.

  • Schools adding Early Decision options

  • AI creeping into the review process (hello, Virginia Tech)

  • Test score requirements being reinstated (👀 Stanford)

  • Increased emphasis on demonstrated interest — often unspoken, but visible.

Increased selectivity at key overlap schools.

  • Which can drive up volume at nearby or similar institutions — affecting even well-balanced lists.

With this information, we’re helping students and families:

✔️ Ensure each list still includes 2+ strong-likelihood schools

✔️ Make space for pivots if early outcomes are disappointing

✔️ Keep parent & student fit ratings aligned

✔️ Reassess those ratings against current realities — not just summer assumptions

These conversations aren’t always easy. Revisiting a college list or adjusting expectations can feel unsettling to a student. More work. More uncertainty. Or fewer choices if they choose not to adapt.

But here’s what we’ve seen again and again:

💪 ❤️ Students rise to the moment. They’re thoughtful, agile, and often relieved to reset and move forward with a plan that fits who they are now.

If your student is feeling unsure or overwhelmed...

Whether they’re finalizing lists, wrestling with essays, or just want a second set of eyes on the application strategy — we’re here to help.

We provide clear, strategic, student-centered guidance to help families move through this season with clarity and confidence.

Supporting students with insight, strategy, and heart — through every phase of the process.

Stay tuned -
